Wills and Probate
Probate and Estate Administration
Our licensed practitioners are here to provide you with sensitive guidance, support, and peace of mind for the administration of probate for any estate size.
We understand how difficult handling someone’s legal and financial affairs can be, especially when dealing with a personal loss. But don’t worry; our team are here to help. We strive to provide as much or as little support as you need to get finances in order.
JH Greenwood & Company was the first accountancy firm in Northumberland and one of the few qualified accountancy firms in the UK to be licensed to carry out probate work following a significant change in the law. Before this change, only solicitors and banks were able to carry out this probate service.
Alongside our industry expertise, you can have total confidence in our team to handle the whole process on your behalf.
A Guide to Probate
Probate and estate administration is a legal and financial process after someone dies. It can be a very complicated and lengthy procedure to complete. Our ‘Guide to Probate’ will help explain the process and the legal and financial terms used.
If the deceased were our client, we would likely have their necessary financial information, which makes the probate process as smooth as possible. However, we could still deal with the probate application if they were not a client—this is on the proviso that their existing accountant is not licensed to carry out this work.
We are always sensitive to your needs and emotions, especially while doing probate work. You can be sure that we will treat your legal and financial affairs discreetly and in the strictest confidence. This is to take the administrative burden away from you wherever possible.
The application for probate is the same, regardless of whether you carry out the estate and probate administration or if we complete it. This application involves:
- Finding the will
- Applying for the grant of representation
- Administering the estate
- Preparing the estate accounts
- Distributing the assets to the beneficiaries of the estate
Our ‘Guide to Probate’ provides a more detailed process overview.
Wills and Probate Advice
Making a Will lets you decide what happens to your money, property and possessions after your death and ensures your family understand your wishes.
A Will is one of the most important legal documents you will ever sign. If you die without a valid Will in the UK, the law can decide who has responsibility for your children under 18. They can also determine who receives your money, property, cars, pets, and other belongings. Please note that the law varies between England, Wales, and Scotland.
At J H Greenwood & Company, we treat your wishes with the utmost sensitivity and confidentiality. We will work with you to assist you in putting your wishes in writing. If you are already a client, we will know your circumstances, simplifying the process.
After signing the Will, we can store it securely for you at no extra charge.
If you need to review your current Will, don’t hesitate to contact the office at 01289 302463 to discuss details with your appointed director. For new clients, we will ensure that a Director is appointed to your case to review your needs thoroughly.
